I learned more and more that when I look “outward” to people, possessions, accomplishments, and circumstances for satisfaction, I’ll be lefty joyless and dissatisfied. This is idolatry. But when I look “upward” to Jesus, I’ll have all my “Inward” needs met because Jesus is the source of all joy and satisfaction. This is worship.
I learned more and more that leadership is about embodying what you want those you lead to become. If I want the people of Transformation Church to live out our vision of being a “multi-ethnic, multi-generational, mission-shaped community that loves God completely, ourselves correctly, and our neighbors compassionately,” then by God’s grace, I must embody it first. If I want our people to be humble, compassionate, generous, courageous, forgiving, and intoxicated by Jesus and His Gospel of grace, then I must embody it first.
I learned more and more that my best leadership moments occur when I say to someone, “I’m sorry; will you forgive me?”
I learned more and more that if I see negative and destructive life patterns in a person on staff; such as pride, fear, deceit, harshness, and poor conflict resolution skills; and I don’t confront them with the rescuing, transforming grace of Jesus [like a mother nursing her children or a father encouraging them], then I’m harming them, their families, Transformation Church, and the Kingdom of God.
I learned more and more that spiritual maturity isn’t determined by how many books a person reads, but by how a person lives, loves, and displays humble-courage.
I learned more and more that the more I’m in awe of Jesus, the less I’m in awe of myself.
I learned more and more that when I find everything in my life “worth less” than Jesus, then I can find true worth in all things.
I learned more and more that the more I love Jesus, the more I love people.
I learned more and more that if Jesus has called you to “it,” He will see you “through” it.
I learned more and more that “less” is actually “more.” We live in an age of information overload. Any form of communication must be remarkable, strategic, focused and add value to people’s lives.
I learned more and more that no one talks to me more than I do. Therefore, I must daily preach the Gospel of grace to myself all day long. In Christ, I’m redeemed, justified, being sanctified, and glorified, forever forgiven, perfect, a new creation, a temple of the Holy Spirit, His bride, His body, His Church, a beloved child of God, sealed and filled by the Spirit. All of this true because of Jesus and His glorious Gospel.
I learned more and more that there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that I could ever do that is NOT covered by the justifying, forgiving, sanctifying, redeeming blood of Jesus. Therefore, I can live a transparent and vulnerable life before my family, staff, and Transformation Church and be open to rebuke and correction from people who love me.
Marinate on that,
